Sam Gilroy is a retired CIA operative but still has connections. He is a friend of Bryan Mills and the godfather of Kimberly Mills.

Bryan calls Sam to have him analyze a tape that Bryan recorded as his daughter was abducted. Sam tells Bryan and Lenore that the kidnappers are Albanians and how their specialty is kidnapping travelling girls for human trafficking. Sam also tells Bryan that he only has a ninety-six hour window to find Kim or he will never see her again.

Sam is seen playing golf with Bernie and Mark Casey. They had to halt their current game when Sam had to take a call from Bryan, who had just driven near a US Embassy in Istanbul to drop off Kim so he could then escape from there and rescue his wife, Lennie and kill any remaining people if he had to. Mills asked that Sam straighten out any of the difficulties he might encounter here at the embassy much to Sam's surprise. Sam reluctantly stated "yes" since he was a loyal pal to Bryan.
Taken 3[]
Sam returns in Taken 3 to help Bryan clear his name after he is wrongly framed for the murder of his ex-wife, Lenore. Sam is shot and wounded by the true antagonist, Stuart. He is not seen again in the film, but it is revealed by Detective Smith that Sam survived getting shot.
In Taken 3, Sam has a major role, and his largest in the whole franchise.
